travel report Lake Constance classic

Golden October is showing itself from its best side: mild temperatures, a light breeze and the bright colors of autumn. My partner and I are full of anticipation as we start our week-long bike tour around Lake Constance. We set off on our e-bikes to discover cultural highlights, spectacular nature and cozy little towns. This trip promises to show us new facets of this picturesque region every day.

An unforgettable adventure

Travel to Constance and explore the city

We arrive in Constance and are immediately impressed by the historic old town. The medieval buildings, charming alleys and relaxed atmosphere captivate us. After checking into our hotel, we make our way to the Cathedral of Our Lady, which impresses with its stunning architecture.
At the harbor, we stand in front of the famous statue of Imperia, which majestically looks out over the water. The evening mood makes the moment special. Our day ends in a cozy Vietnamese restaurant in the old town, where we enjoy fresh, delicious dishes. The “Good Rice” convinces with a varied menu and a nice atmosphere – a successful start to our trip.

From Constance to Gailingen

Our first stage takes us along Lake Constance to Gailingen. The route offers us enchanting views of the sparkling water and the colorful autumn forests. We make a stopover on the island of Reichenau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here we explore the historic churches and the famous vegetable gardens that give the island its special charm.

Once we arrive in Gailingen, we will enjoy the picturesque view of the Rhine. The place exudes a peaceful calm, and our hotel welcomes us warmly. We will let the day come to a relaxed close and look forward to the next stage.

From Gailingen to Überlingen

Strengthened by breakfast, we make our way through the idyllic Höri peninsula. The charming villages and untouched nature impress us. In Radolfzell, we take a break, enjoy a coffee and watch the world go by on the promenade.

On our way to Überlingen, we visit the pile dwellings of Unteruhldingen, an open-air museum that takes us back to the Stone and Bronze Ages. It is fascinating to get a glimpse of life on Lake Constance thousands of years ago.

Überlingen welcomes us with its romantic old town. We stroll through the narrow streets and admire the magnificent Minster of St. Nicholas. Our hotel is located in a park just above the city, an oasis of calm after an active day.

From Überlingen to Lindau

Today we start under cloudy skies, but the mood remains good. Our route takes us through Meersburg and Friedrichshafen. In Meersburg, we admire the imposing castle and enjoy the view of the picturesque vineyards. Friedrichshafen surprises us with the exciting Zeppelin Museum, which immerses us in the history of airship travel.

In the afternoon, we are caught by the rain as we reach Lindau. The island town looks almost mystical in the light rain. The lighthouse and the Bavarian lion at the harbor are impressive landmarks that do not lose their charm even in gray weather. After a warm meal, we feel strengthened again.

From Lindau to Arbon

Today's route takes us from Lindau to Arbon in Switzerland. The sky is clear and the Alps stand out majestically on the horizon. We cycle along the well-developed Lake Constance cycle path and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Arbon welcomes us with charming half-timbered houses and an inviting promenade. After checking in, we take a walk along the lake and let ourselves be enchanted by the relaxed atmosphere of the place.

Arborn Römerhof

From Arbon to Constance

Our last stage takes us back to Constance. The route passes through orchards, where we are accompanied by the scent of ripe apples. In Romanshorn, we take a break and enjoy the view over Lake Constance for the last time.

Back in Constance, we celebrate the end of our trip with a special dinner at “La Colette”, a restaurant run by Michelin-starred chef Tim Raue. The vegan menus and the matching wine pairings are a delight and the perfect end to our tour.

Departure from Constance

After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we bid farewell to Constance. The memories of the trip will remain vivid: the picturesque landscapes, the charming towns and the many little experiences along the way.

Our conclusion

Cycling around Lake Constance is an unforgettable experience. The combination of exercise, nature and cultural highlights makes this trip something very special. The well-developed cycle paths and the diversity of the region – from vineyards and historic towns to Alpine panoramas – offer something for everyone. Even in October, Lake Constance shows itself from its most beautiful side, and the pleasant temperatures make cycling particularly enjoyable. We highly recommend this tour and look forward to our next bike trip.
