Hills, valleys and plains, forests and agriculture, lakes and fish ponds - a quiet and varied landscape awaits you on this bike tour. Embedded in this landscape you will find palaces and fortresses of the former rulers, churches and monasteries, small centuries-old towns with neat patrician houses and, last but not least, the famous "Bohemian villages". The rich history of this region can be seen and felt everywhere. You spend the night in middle-class hotels, which, except in Prague, are located in historical town centers. The cycle path mainly leads along side roads with little traffic, only in the cities you cannot avoid sections with traffic. On some days the cycle stage is also slightly hilly.

This trip is perfect for:

  • City lovers: you can explore České Budějovice and Prague on this tour.
  • Relaxed cyclists: from České Budějovice to Prague.
  • History buffs: there is plenty to discover on this tour.

Highlights

Budvar (České Budějovice)
Elegant townhouses gathered around one of the largest squares in Europe, an idyllic salt store and a brewery cooking up the original Budvar beer - this is České Budějovice, the capital of South Bohemia. This city has preserved its historical character over the centuries but is also a modern regional centre. So come and savour the city’s pleasant atmosphere with a tankard of our world famous beer.

Konopiště Castle
Take a peek into Franz Ferdinand’s bedroom at Konopiště Castle. Visit a chateau where one of the first electric lifts, electricity and plumbing mains were installed! Walk through the sitting rooms and guest rooms, the dining room and armoury and imagine yourself for a moment in the life of the chateau before World War One. In the official factory museum of the JAWA brand, you can then admire unique exhibits, trophies and historical documents relating to the most famous of Czech motorcycles.

Tábor
A labyrinth of medieval streets, monumental city walls, and a fascinating history. You’ll find all this in the South Bohemian city of Tabor, founded in the 15th century as a model of the perfect city, where everyone is equal. Come learn the story of a place which in the Middle Ages became indelibly inscribed in the history of the Czech lands – and soak in its unparalleled atmosphere.

Cervená Lhota Castle
The Cervená Lhota Castle rebuilt from the Gothic fort in the 16th century was a place of amusement, celebrations and leisure. At the beginning of the 17th century it obtained a new red brick roof and the original name of Nová Lhota (New Village) changed to Červená Lhota (Red Village), and later the same colour was acquired by the facade.

Třeboň
The location of Trebon, a city in the middle of a protected landscape area in South Bohemia, makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Czech Republic today. Not only does the city possess a historical centre and spas, but it is surrounded by forests and lakes of the “Třeboňská Pánev”.

Hluboká Castle
Hluboká Castle is the ideal destination in South Bohemia for history buffs, incorrigible romantics and even those who worship sport. The castle owes its current appearance to the Schwarzenberg family and is often described as the most beautiful Czech castle.
A piece of Windsor England in the middle of South Bohemin: that’s how one could sum up the magical Hluboká Castle, which got its present appearance in the 19th century after a Neo-Gothic reconstruction. Hluboká Castle was originally founded as a guardian castle in the middle of the 13th century by Bohemian kings. Within the context of the Romantic modification of the noble residence, the Schwarzenbergs founded an expansive landscaped park in the mid 19th century.

Your journey starts in Budweis. If you arrive by car, you can park comfortably not far from the hotel. Take time to stroll through the largest market square in Bohemia, treat yourself to the view from the Black Tower and enjoy a Budweiser from the barrel!.

Today you cycle partly flat along the Vltava to the UNESCO pearl of South Bohemia: Český Krumlov. A beautiful old town center and the second largest castle in the Czech Republic await you there - Český Krumlov Castle and Chateau. Enjoy your time in this unique place on the Vltava. Then cycle back to České Budějovice.

Along the Vltava River, the route first heads north on a flat stretch to one of the most beautiful castles in Bohemia: Hluboká Castle, built in the Tudor style. In its almost 140 rooms you can marvel at rich collections of furniture, paintings, porcelain and weapons from different eras. Hluboká Castle is an imitation of Windsor Castle in England. After an extensive tour, your cycle route continues through many Roman villages to Tyn, a small, old town on the banks of the Vltava. After Tyn, you cycle a little away from the Vltava through the beautiful but hilly landscape to the historic town of Bechyne.

An interesting scenic stage awaits you today: you do not cycle directly along the Vltava today, but quite hilly at some distance and reach Tábor in the afternoon, the town of the Hussites, who founded a fortification with the biblical name here in 1420. Thanks to its rich history, architectural monuments and romantic landscape stretching along the Luznice River, Tábor is one of the most visited places in the Czech Republic. The preserved remains of the extensive fortifications and the picturesque corners of the old town are a reminder of its rich history at every turn. The old town is now a protected monument. The Hussite Museum in the late Gothic town hall is definitely worth a visit. In the center of the town is the oldest reservoir in Central Europe, called Jordán, which was created as early as 1492. On hot summer days, this is a wonderful place to end your cycle tour.

The cycle path leads through Bohemian landscapes on the ´Hussite´ route specially created for cyclists, where you will visit important places in the life of the famous church reformer Jan Hus, to Benesov. Shortly before Benesov, another highlight awaits you, the world-famous Konopiste Castle, where the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy, Archduke Ferdinand, whose murder in Sarajevo triggered the First World War, lived. Over 300,000 (!) Hunting trophies hang in the castle. Did you know that Konopiste is the most visited castle in Bohemia?

From Benešov, your cycle tour takes you along numerous narrow roads to Karlštejn, where the imposing castle once guarded the royal crown jewels. Today, the fortress is one of the most important sights in the Czech Republic. About halfway along the route, you cross the Vltava, which is dammed to form a reservoir at this point.

On the last day you cycle along the Berounka and Vltava rivers on a wonderfully quiet and flat route and finally reach the end and highlight of your trip - "Golden Prague". Take plenty of time for the cultural highlight and destination of this cycle tour! In Prague, literally every house, every square and every street corner invites you to stop and take in the sights. Prague enjoys the reputation of being one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is not for nothing that it has been given nicknames such as "Golden Prague", "Prague with a Hundred Towers" or "Crown of the World".

Unfortunately, your bike tour through South Bohemia comes to an end after breakfast. You can return to Budweis by transfer or by train, or you can start your journey home directly from Prague. Of course, you can also extend your stay in Prague, because this city has so much to offer that one day is hardly enough to visit it.
