travel report Radial tour Münsterland

I still think back to past bike tours with my husband, we have experienced a lot in the saddle. We still want to discover a lot, but something is different now: we are traveling as a family.
The first cycling vacation with my husband and our daughter should be something special for all of us and so, after a short consideration, we choose the Münster radial tour.

After a short period of preparation, we set off - here we come!

Münster is the cycling capital of Germany, with around 4,500 signposted, mostly flat cycle paths that take you comfortably through the city center and the surrounding Münsterland countryside.
We deliberately opted for e-bikes as we wanted to transport our 2-year-old daughter comfortably in the rented bike trailer. This way, we are well prepared for all eventualities and can relax and enjoy the daily stages of a good 30 km each.

The first cycling vacation for three

Arrival Münster

After arriving and a smooth check-in at the Mövenpick Hotel Münster, we leave our bikes and walk to the Münster Zoo.
Our afternoon program starts just in time for the penguins' feeding time, with happy children's eyes. Between monkeys, seals and the beloved giraffes, there are plenty of options for romping and playing. The Marché restaurant offers a good selection for young and old, as well as for those who enjoy vegan cuisine, and rounds off the animal visit. While my husband and our little one make themselves comfortable in the hotel room and the big bed after returning, I let the day come to a relaxed close in the hotel's sauna area.

Round trip to sewage farms, herons and orchards

Let's go – the first bike tour is on the agenda. After we have stowed our day luggage and loaded the bicycle trailer with books and other child-friendly items, it's time to put on our helmets and get on our bikes. In perfect cycling weather, we leave the bustling city center via the promenade without incident and after a few kilometers we are already in the middle of the Rieselfelder. Cycling through a scenically appealing environment with a sleeping child – simply wonderful.
We quickly pass the inviting village of Gimbte, because at this moment our daughter is in charge: “Mom, go on”. A few kilometers further on, in the middle of the Bockolter Bergen, it's time to count sheep and everyone is happy. What a spontaneous and unexpected experience in the middle of a beautiful heath landscape. There could be no better place and time for a break. In the early afternoon, fortified by our picnic, we reach the Dortmund-Ems Canal and cycle comfortably back towards Münster. Of course, we will take two more breaks at playgrounds and stop to splash around in the Münstersche Aa. Our reward will be a large ice cream sundae for each of us at the “Schlecks” in Münster; a delicious end to the day's stage. Our conclusion of the day: always keep your eyes open, it's worth it!

Round trip between the Angel, Werse and Hohe Ward

After a successful bike tour on the first day, we are all looking forward to the second bike stage.
Hedda is happy and can't wait to get back in the Croozer: “Bike tour, water”. And so the main destination for today is clearly defined: Hiltruper Lake. True to the motto: the journey is the destination, we ride through well-kept residential areas and along the Werse. We ride a few more relaxed and comfortable kilometers with our sleeping child. Our first destination for the day and the recommended ice cream parlor “Eiscafe Etna” in Albersloh are quickly reached. What we have learned as parents: On vacation, you can eat ice cream for lunch. Happy and refreshed, we get back on our bikes with the goal of reaching Hiltruper See. After a leisurely picnic right on the lake, surrounded by ducks, we explore the nearby playground before letting the sat nav guide us to Hiltrup's open-air swimming pool. Because where better to spend a summer afternoon than at the open-air pool? The Hiltrup open-air pool is definitely a must for all water lovers and a welcome change from the bicycle saddle. Leisure swimmers, slide lovers, sunbathers and toddlers are all equally pampered here – bathing fun for the whole family.

Guided bike tour in Münster

We are met by Florian right on time at 9:30 am and he gives us a caring guided tour of the city – a bike tour, which is a little different. Of course, we learn facts and figures about Münster and anecdotes from the life of a cyclist, and at the end of the tour, we are given new destinations to explore. So we stop for a snack at the popular weekly market on the cathedral square and enjoy our potato pancakes in the hustle and bustle. Happy kid, happy parents – and so a city tour with the Münsterbus follows. An hour in the double-decker bus, right at the front and directly behind the window, is an impressive experience and just as comfortable as the bicycle trailer. To round off the day in Münster, we then wait for the next departure of the Solaaris, Allwetterzoo station, and experience the lively Aasee from the water. Sunbathers on the shore, sailors, walkers and visitors to the Aaseeterrassen - there is plenty to see.

The radial tour in Münsterland is the perfect introduction for families with children.

Flat bike paths, short stages, no packing and unpacking every day, grazing animals along the way, opportunities for swimming and playgrounds – every day brings new destinations that not only the youngest can look forward to.

Our conclusion

A short break becomes an experience when you spontaneously embrace the adventures.
And yes, we didn't want to do without the e-bike despite the mostly flat Münsterland – because with support, you can simply travel without effort.
