Look forward to the Neckar Cycle Path, which connects two historic university towns so worth seeing. From Tübingen, the Neckar finally becomes a real river, so big that it is even a federal waterway from Plochingen. You cycle through the heart of Württemberg, discover the capital Stuttgart, the magnificent residence in Ludwigsburg and Germany's probably most beautiful wine town Besigheim with its winding old town alleys. Along impressive steep vineyards you cycle along the banks of the Neckar to Bad Wimpfen, the old imperial palace of the Staufers. Look forward to the capital of Württemberg's red wine, Heilbronn, whose sights are mostly within walking distance of the city center. Between castles and palaces you cycle through the romantic Neckar valley from Swabia to Baden and discover the towering red sandstone rocks of the Odenwald. Here, the Neckar Valley Cycle Path once again offers high enjoyment. Finally, you will be released from the Odenwald into the Rhine plain and reach Heidelberg, admired and appreciated worldwide.
The route does not always run directly near the river, so slight climbs are unavoidable. The well-signposted bike path leads on bike paths and farm roads with not always paved surface and in places also on relatively quiet country roads. Short sections must sometimes be covered on roads with heavier traffic.

This trip is perfect for:

  • City lovers: Let yourself be enchanted by the romantic flair of Heidelberg and explore Tübingen on your trip!
  • Nature lovers who not only love nature but also culture, here you get both with great cities and equally beautiful wine landscapes.
  • Pleasure-seekers who like to sit in a beer garden or restaurant with a good wine in their hand.

Highlights

Tübingen
The beautiful university town of Tübingen on the Neckar River in the geographical center of the state of Baden-Württemberg is a forge of poets and thinkers, where teaching and research have been conducted for over 530 years.

German Literature Archive Marbach
In Marbach, the German Literature Archive awaits you with the two museums worth seeing, the "Schiller National Museum" and the "Museum of Modern Literature" and is located on the Schillerhöhe.

Hornberg Castle
On the steep rocky spur "Hornberg" above the Neckar, it stands there as if chiseled: the dream castle of Götz von Berlichingen, the largest and best preserved castle ruin on the Neckar: Hornberg Castle.

Heidelberg
The landmark of Heidelberg sits about 70 meters above the Neckar River on the slope of its local mountain, the Königstuhl. The ruins of the Electoral Palace are among the most impressive things you can marvel at on a trip to Germany. No one who has taken a walk on the Philosopher's Path will forget the sight of the river, city and castle from there.

Tour

Look forward to the lively Swabian university town of Tübingen and let yourself be enchanted by the picturesque old town and the steep winding alleys.

You will cycle down the Neckar River through charming countryside. Take a refreshing break at one of the numerous bathing lakes before you reach the picturesque town of Nürtingen. Take a stroll through the historic old town, discover many picturesque nooks and crannies and marvel at the tower of the town church. The Neckar Cycle Path then takes you to Plochingen, where you should definitely marvel at the rain tower by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Look forward to historic Esslingen, with its Gothic churches, medieval half-timbered houses and winding cobblestone streets and small water canals.

Today your bike tour takes you to the capital of Baden-Württemberg, Stuttgart. Cycle to the Schlossplatz, which is well worth seeing, and marvel at the old and new palaces. From here you are immediately in the city center with all the Swabian specialties. Try a pretzel fresh from the oven on your hand, let yourself be spoiled in a cozy wine tavern or visit the market hall in the historic Art Nouveau building, where exotic spices, fresh baked goods and fragrant specialties are offered. Passing the baroque town of Ludwigsburg, you will then cycle to Marbach, the birthplace of the famous poet Friedrich Schiller. Enjoy the evening in this pretty little town on the Neckar River.

Over meadows and fields you cycle to Besigheim and always close to the river bank until you reach the wine town Lauffen. Take a break and stroll through the historic old town and marvel at the town hall castle, the old Heilbronn Gate and the old wine press. Afterwards, cycle through a beautiful wine landscape to the Käthchenstadt Heilbronn. Stroll through the old town in the afternoon and visit the numerous monuments such as the Gothic Kilianskirche, the Käthchenhaus or the town hall, which is one of the most beautiful in Germany.

Today you follow the Castle Road and come to Neckarsulm with the German Two-Wheeler Museum in the former Deutschordensschloss. It offers the largest historical collection of its kind. The pretty market square with market square fountain, the old city wall, the Deutschordenschloss, the castle chapel, the city hall built in 1782 and the baroque city parish church are waiting for your visit. Passing lush wine terraces and wooded ridges, you will then pass Hornberg Castle and Zwingenberg Castle. Look forward to an evening in the old Staufer town of Eberbach with its historic town center, the many half-timbered houses, the Rose Tower and Haspel Tower.

Between Eberbach and Heidelberg, the Neckar River winds its way through the Odenwald hills. You cycle idyllically along the Neckar cycle path. You will reach Hirschhorn, which is overlooked by its knight's castle. Take a worthwhile break in the four-castle town of Neckarsteinach, situated in one of the most beautiful parts of the Neckar valley surrounded by 4 castles and the mountain fortress of Dilsberg. The 5-kilometer-long riverside promenade and the Nibelungen Garden invite you to linger, and you can conquer the castles all around on foot along signposted hiking trails. In Neckargemünd you will cross the river again to reach the university town of Heidelberg.

You would like to stay longer because Heidelberg has so much to offer? No problem, we will gladly book you an extra night.
