This round trip between Fulda and Werra will inspire you. You can expect landscapes that resemble a postcard idyll. Almost untouched, almost wildly romantic the nature appears here, through which the Fulda and Werra meander. Discover proud castles and old half-timbered towns in this gentle hilly landscape on the former inner-German border. Let yourself be inspired by 1000 years of history, by the art along the cycle path and in the document city of Kassel. Many things on the way will seem like fairy tales, no wonder, because you are moving in the land of the Brothers Grimm. You will cycle on the Fulda Cycle Path and the Werratal Cycle Path as well as on low-traffic roads and farm tracks. On the 5th day there are about 200 meters of heights to master between Bebra and Sontra (bridging by train possible), otherwise there are only minor differences in heights on your varied bike tour.

This trip is perfect for peole who:

  • Nature lovers: This tour will delight you with its lakes, forests and fantastic mountains.
  • River fans: cycle along the Fulda on your journey.
  • City lovers: Be enchanted by the small towns along the route.

Highlights

Hann. Münden
On the market square in the middle of the historical town center with about 700 half-timbered houses is one of the most beautiful representative buildings of the Weserrenaissance: the Münden town hall.

Hann. Münden

Town Hall Melsungen
Built in 1556 after the destruction of the old town hall by a great fire, it is considered one of the most beautiful half-timbered houses in Germany.

Town Hall Melsungen

Old town Eschwege
Eschwege's half-timbered buildings are highly interesting, as they are situated in a stylistic transitional area between the Franconian, Lower Saxon and Thuringian wood architecture, and the influences of all these styles have been condensed into a landscape-typical and unmistakable architecture since the middle of the 17th century.

Border museum Schifflersgrund
The border museum is located in the original place, where until 1989 the German-German border system ran.

Kassel
The expansive Karlsaue, with its artificial lakes and ponds, shows the Baroque form, according to which Landgraf Karl had laid the park in the 18th century.

Tour

Arrive early and look forward to Hann. Münden, idyllically situated at the confluence of the Fulda and Werra rivers. With over 700 half-timbered houses from six centuries, the old town still enchants visitors from all over the world.

A beautiful bike route along the Fulda River to Kassel - the "Capital of the German Fairy Tale Route" - awaits you today. The statue of Hercules, the imposing UNESCO cultural heritage site on Wilhelmshöhe, greets you from afar. Kassel is not only worth a visit during the world-famous art exhibition Documenta. Therefore, visit the worth seeing Museum Fridericianum and the Orangerie in the Fuldaauen. Like a rising sun, the Orangerie shines out between the trees. Let your first day of cycling come to a pleasant end here.

The Fulda Cycle Path initially winds its way through the varied Hessian hilly landscape, always in the immediate vicinity of the Fulda. In the afternoon you continue cycling through the meadows and fields of the Melsungen region. Look forward to the small half-timbered town of Melsungen, which is over 1000 years old! Marvel at the flower-filled alleys, the many lovingly decorated half-timbered houses, the idyllic market square and one of the most beautiful half-timbered town halls in Germany.

Today you cycle along the river Fulda into the wooded north of Hessen. Hessen's only basket maker museum and the Cistercian nunnery Haydau in Morschen are just a few highlights. On the way, a special experience awaits you between Morschen-Binsförth and Malsfeld-Beiseförth. You will cross the Fulda on a distance of 50 m in the air! With the help of a bicycle cableway unique in Germany. Nestled in the narrowest part of the Fulda valley, you will then reach your destination for the day, the romantic half-timbered old town of Rotenburg a. d. Fulda.

Today you cycle through the charming low mountain range between the Fulda and the Werra from the Fulda to the Werra. Between Bebra and Sontra you have to master about 200 meters of height difference, which you could also cover by train. Look forward to Eschwege, stroll through the half-timbered town on the Werra and marvel at 1,000 and more half-timbered houses with magnificent carvings. Some of these houses of the old half-timbered town lean a bit and gain charm just because of that. At the town hall you can listen to the chimes and maybe discover the symbolic figure of Eschwege, the Dietemann. He appears every hour on the clock and blows his horn.

Today you cycle along the Werra. Sculptures by well-known artists line the banks and tempt you to stop off. It is nice that you arrive early in the half-timbered town of Bad Sooden-Allendorf. Salt and brine have determined the fortunes of the town here for centuries. Feel the natural power of the brine and relax on a tour of the graduation house or unwind in the 32-degree warm brine water at the Werratal Therme or in the diverse sauna landscape.

Passing proud castles, you cycle along the Werratal cycle path to the cherry town of Witzenhausen. Stroll through the historic town center with its many half-timbered houses and marvel at the town hall, the old town wall and the Diebesturm. Afterwards you cycle through Europe's largest closed cherry-growing area to Hann. Münden.

Unfortunately, it's already over, but if you want to go further, just cycle along the Weser to the North Sea.
