Dat Otto Hus

Emden Art Gallery
This nationally renowned museum with its associated painting school is thanks to the founding couple Henri and Eske Nannen. In 1986, STERN founder Henri Nannen opened a museum in his home town of Emden to house his collection, primarily of classical modern art. Since 2000, a donation from the Munich gallery owner Otto van de Loo has added post-1945 art to the collection.

Borkum

It is difficult to find a Borkumer who is not descended from a whaler. Stories and relics from that time are correspondingly easy to discover. They can be found on every corner on the North Sea island of Borkum.

Museum Deichhaus Borkum

Dat ‘Dykhus’ (dyke house) is situated on a mound at the foot of the first dyke that is known to have been built on Borkum and is a type of gulf house.

Greetsiel

Those who come to Greetsiel are captivated by the enchanting sight of a doll's house village with historic gabled houses from the 17th century, the over 600-year-old fishing harbour with its impressive fleet of shrimp boats, the famous Greetsiel twin mills and picturesque alleyways.

Tea Museum Norden

Tour

You should plan plenty of time in Emden on your arrival: the harbour, art gallery and Ottohaus await you. In the afternoon, you will have an information meeting with bike handover (if booked) and you will still have time to explore Emden.

Your day starts comfortably with a 2-hour boat trip to the largest of the East Frisian islands, Borkum. Once there, savour the fresh sea air and marvel at Borkum's long tradition as a whaling island. You can explore the island on the 130 km network of cycle paths or alternatively relax with a day of swimming on the island's 26 km long sandy beach. In the late afternoon, take the boat back to Emden.

Today you cycle to the picturesque fishing village of Greetsiel, the largest shrimp cutter harbour in the Weser-Ems region. Fresh from the cutter - you should definitely try a portion of really good prawns. Cycle past the Leybucht bay - where you may be lucky enough to spot seals - to Norden, where you can visit the Ocean Wave adventure pool. Or you can cycle to the beach in Norddeich and end the day on the beach.

Set sail again! In one hour you will sail from Norddeich to Norderney. Look forward to the oldest seaside resort of the East Frisian Islands with over 14 kilometres of white sandy beach and wonderfully long dunes. Discover the beauties of the island, the historic Kurhaus, the lighthouse, the observatory and the lifeboat shed. Return to Norden in the late afternoon.

Today's cycle tour takes you past the old chieftain's castles to Dornum with the most beautiful moated castle in East Frisia. Cycle through the wide marshes to Bensersiel. Then enjoy the crossing to the car-free island of Langeoog. Two overnight stays await you there, giving you plenty of time to explore the island. Not all bicycle parking facilities on Langeoog are covered, so we ask for your understanding.

A wonderful day lies ahead of you: you have the whole day to explore the beauty of the island, the former home of singer Lale Andersen (Lili Marleen). You won't encounter any cars on Langeoog, but you will enjoy the fresh sea air, peace and quiet and the island fair. You will be amazed by the sand dunes, which are over 20 metres high. Relax on a cycle tour to the eastern tip, visit a museum, sunbathe or take a walk on the beach. You have all the options and can choose how to organise your day.

Unfortunately, it's time to say goodbye to the island of Langeoog and return to the mainland by boat. In Bensersiel you get on your bikes and cycle to Aurich, the old capital of East Frisia. Here you can marvel at the historic old town and the Stiftsmühle, one of the largest windmills in East Frisia. In the windmill, it is worth climbing up to the 17 metre high gallery, as it offers you a fantastic view of Aurich and the surrounding geest and moorland landscape. From here you follow the Ems-Jade Canal, which takes you to Emden, which is almost car-free.

Your cycle tour in East Frisia ends after breakfast. On request, we can book an extension for you in Emden.
