Tour
The Swedish capital is spread over 14 islands in Sweden's third largest lake, Mälaren. Impressive buildings, castles and a rich culture tell the 700 year old history of this impressive city. Use the time to stroll through the old town (Gamla Stan) with its cobbled streets, crooked houses, the Royal Castle, Gothic churches, excellent cafes, bars and restaurants.
On your first leg, you cycle along Lake Mälaren on a trade route that has existed since Viking times. Look forward to Drottningholm Palace, the "Swedish Versailles", on the island of Lovön, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once a royal pleasure palace, it is now the private residence of the Swedish royal family. Take your time for the beautiful castle with a wonderful location on the lake. Together with the exotic little "China Castle", the Castle Theater and the wonderful Castle Park, Drottningholm forms an impressive ensemble. Then we continue by ferry towards Södertälje, through typical Swedish landscapes with extensive fields and forests. The small town of Södertälje, home of Scania, is soon reached. Supposedly, the world's oldest steamship still in operation, the S/S Ejdern, is located here. On Torekällberget in central Södertälje is the Torekällberget open-air museum, where you can see, among other things, the Nora kvarn windmill and old Södertälje houses and farms.
Freshly strengthened, we continue on small side roads to the tranquil town of Mariefred, past Gripsholm Castle. With its idyllic location right on the water and its unmistakable brick-red walls and towers, Gripsholm is one of the most beautiful and well-known castles in Scandinavia. In addition to its function as a defensive structure, the castle served primarily as a representative residence for Gustav I Vasa, but also as the widow's residence of Queens Maria Eleonora and Hedwig Eleonora. The castle is also known for Kurt Tucholsky's story of the same name from 1931. Tucholsky himself lived in exile in Sweden and found his final resting place in Mariefred. The place impresses with narrow streets, wooden houses and its idyllic atmosphere. Cafes and small shops invite you to linger.
Today the impressive green landscape of Sörmland awaits you. Subsidence in the northern part gave rise to numerous rivers and lakes. The upcoming climbs will be rewarded with long descents and beautiful views. Look forward to your hotel in beautiful nature by one of the many lakes in the small town of Järna with the world-famous anthroposophy village "Ytterjärna" with its biodynamic gardens and special architecture.
After breakfast it's time to "saddle up" again and look forward to the picturesque bathing resort of Trosa, today's stage destination. Here, pastel-colored wooden houses with intricately designed carvings and colorful gardens line the narrow river Trosaån, which runs through the small village. In the narrow cobblestone streets, cafés nestle up against small shops that entice with Swedish cosiness. The place is also known as the setting for many popular “Inga Lindstrom” films. End your day with an evening stroll through the idyllic town and enjoy the wonderful views of the water. A visit to the small restaurants is also highly recommended!
On the last stage you cycle further north and after a short ferry ride you arrive back on one of Stockholm's islands. You bridge the last stretch with the S-Bahn to Stockholm (not included) and cycle back to your hotel via the southern city island of Södermalm. Take the time to get to know the former working-class district of Södermalm a little better first. Söder, as the locals call their neighborhood, south of the old town, is now a hip nightlife district and Sweden's alternative living room for artists, intellectuals and students. But the former sleazy district of Stockholm also has a lot to offer in terms of tourism, such as the Stadsmuseum, which tells the story of Stockholm. Round off the last evening in the Swedish capital with a delicious meal in one of the many restaurants.
After breakfast your bike tour ends today. Or you can extend your stay in Stockholm for some days to enjoy the beautiful capital of Sweden.
