North of the Triglav National Park, your cycle tour begins at the picturesque Lake Bled in Slovenia. You follow the Sava as you cycle along the foothills of the Julian Alps via the winter sports resort of Kranjska Gora to Italy. From here, the famous Alpe-Adria Cycle Path takes you along a historic railway line through tunnels and over old steel bridges that offer impressive views of the Canal Valley. The Tagliamento river accompanies you through the charming towns of Venzone and Gemona del Friuli to Udine, where you can enjoy the flair of a typical Italian city. Via the Palmanova fortress, you continue towards the sea, to the quiet fishing village of Marano Lagunare and finally to Caorle, a popular holiday resort on the northern Adriatic. The crowning glory of this journey is the lagoon city of Venice.

Highlights:

Lake Bled
At the site of the Lake Bled was once a tectonic basin formed by the Bohinj glacier.

Bled Castle
The history of the Bled Castle dates back to 1004, when the German Emperor Henry II donated the Bled estate to Bishop Albuin of Bressanone.

Udine
During a walk through the historic centre of Udine, which stretches around the castle, you will come across the Loggia del Lionello, the Clock Tower, the works of Tiepolo and the Tina Modotti Gallery, which is dedicated to the great photographer who was born here.

Caorle
A stroll through the centre of Caorle simply never gets boring. Stroll through the narrow alleyways and idyllic squares, past the colourfully painted, restored fishermen's houses, the cathedral and the small church of the Madonna di Pompei.

Doge's Palace Venice
The mighty Doge's Palace in Venice with its façade of white stone and pink marble, it almost looks like a moated castle, so close is it to the canal.

Trip

Bled, the jewel on the edge of the Triglav National Park, enchants visitors with its crystal-clear glacial lake, which is overlooked by a majestic castle. Discover the charming little town and the famous island in the lake - probably the most famous photo motif in Slovenia!

You leave the lake and follow the valley of the Sava, the longest river in Slovenia. From here, the well-developed cycle path takes you through dense forests, over picturesque bridges and along a former railway line to the famous winter sports resort of Kranjska Gora. Here, where ski racers compete for World Cup points in winter, you can take a relaxing break. Afterwards, it is only a short distance until you reach the Italian border and your overnight stay in Tarvisio.

An excellently developed cycle path also awaits you in Italy. Cycle leisurely downhill through the idyllic Canal Valley and enjoy the view of the impressive landscape of the Friulian Alps with its unspoilt nature and extensive forests. Be sure to take a break in the charming village square of Venzone, which was carefully rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1976. You will spend the night in one of the picturesque villages at the foot of the Julian Alps.

One of the most charming historic towns in Friuli Venezia Giulia awaits you at the southern end of the Canal Valley. Gemona del Friuli impresses with its majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, which characterises the townscape. On the way to Udine, you will discover the first vines along the route. Once you arrive in Udine, you can enjoy the ‘dolce vita’ in a cosy café on the piazza or admire the impressive late Gothic and Renaissance buildings on a relaxing stroll through the picturesque alleyways.

After numerous impressions and a pinch of ‘dolce vita’, you leave Udine and follow the old Roman road ‘Via Claudia Augusta’ southwards. Cycle through the wide, gentle landscape of Friuli through charming, typically regional villages to the historic fortified town of Palmanova, which impresses with its star-shaped layout. Treat yourself to a creamy ice cream in the imposing Piazza Grande before continuing your journey towards the coast. In Cervignano, you leave the famous Alpe-Adria cycle path and follow the lagoon to picturesque Marano Lagunare.

A warm Scirocco breeze blows gently around your nose as you cycle inland before reaching the lagoon and the sea at Lignano again. In summer, it is possible to shorten this stretch from Marano Lagunare to Lignano with a self-organised ferry ride. The route then leads through the flat coastal landscape along quiet side roads, often through uninhabited areas, to the lively holiday resort of Caorle. In the afternoon, the long sandy beaches invite you to enjoy the typical Italian holiday feeling to the full.

Cycle along the coast towards the lagoon town. Once in Jesolo, you follow the River Sile for a while, which eventually flows into the Adriatic Sea. You continue along the lagoon to the tip of the headland in Punta Sabbioni, where you take the ferry to Venice. From there, it is only a short ride on the cycle path over the Liberty Bridge to Mestre.

Your wonderful journey ends today after breakfast at the hotel in Venice-Mestre. Venice has a lot to offer. We are happy to book extra nights for you.
