Highlights

Prague
Prague (Praha in Czech) was the ancient capital of Charles IV's Bohemian Kingdom, and has played a pivotal role in the development of Central Europe since the Middle Ages. Its epic history has produced a vibrant city of stunning buildings and lovely old squares, with the result that today Prague is one of the world's most beautiful cities. As visitors to Prague have increased, tourism has become of vital economic importance to the city.

Prague, Charle's Bridge
It is one of the oldest stone bridges in Europe: the Charles Bridge (Karlsbrücke) over the Vltava. It is limited by two towers and is only open to pedestrians and is very lively around the clock. The Charles Bridge (Karluv Most) connects the Malá Strana and Staré Mesto districts with 16 arches. Numerous figures of Saints line the edges of the bridge. The most famous is that of Saint Jan Nepomuk, who was thrown into the Vltava at this point. The bridge is something like a open-air museum, although many figures are no longer can be seen as original.

Prague, Jewish Town
Few European cities can boast a better preserved Jewish Ghetto than Prague. Six synagogues, a Jewish Town Hall, magical cemetery and the unique genius loci make Josefov in Prague a place which you should certainly not leave out when you are wandering around the “Golden City”. Get to know the unsettled history of the Prague Jews, their architecture, traditions, customs and stories, which rank among some of the most tragic of the 20th century.

Prag, Castle
Prague Castle was most likely founded in around 880 by Prince Bořivoj of the Premyslid Dynasty (Přemyslovci). According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m². A UNESCO World Heritage site, it consists of a large-scale composition of palaces and ecclesiastical buildings of various architectural styles, from the remains of Romanesque-style buildings from the 10th century through Gothic modifications of the 14th century. The famous Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik was responsible for extensive renovations in the time of the First Republic (1918-1938). Since the Velvet Revolution, Prague Castle has undergone significant and ongoing repairs and reconstructions.

Prague, Astronomical Clock
Every hour, hundreds of tourists from all over the world with cameras at the ready gather in front of the Old Town Hall to enjoy a fascinating mechanical performance which in the Middle Ages was considered one of the wonders of the world. The Prague Astronomical Clock, which for 600 years has been one of the greatest treasures of the city, still amazes people with its procession of Apostles, moving statues and visualization of time like no other instrument in the world.

Orlík Castle
Built in the thirteenth-century on a 60-meter high cliff, Orlik Castle dominates the Vltava River valley. Today, however, the castle doesn't soar nearly as high over the river - since the Vltava was damned during the last century, Orlík has sat on the largest artificial lake in the Czech Republic. Orlík Castle has long belonged to the Schwarzenbergs, an influential family during the reign of the Habsburgs. Today, the castle museum houses the personal collection of this noble family. The arms room has an exceptionally beautiful interior.

České Budějovice
Elegant townhouses gathered around one of the largest squares in Europe, an idyllic salt store and a brewery cooking up the original Budvar beer - this is České Budějovice, the capital of South Bohemia. This city has preserved its historical character over the centuries but is also a modern regional centre. So come and savour the city’s pleasant atmosphere with a tankard of our world famous beer.

Český Krumlov
For centuries, the small town Český Krumlov on the Vltava River has been known as the Pearl of Bohemian Forest, thanks to its unique location in a Vltava loop. In 1992, UNESCO declared the entire inner city a world cultural heritage: the ensemble of 300 historic houses with the castle and castle complex impresses every visitor. The winding alleyways, the wooden balconies, the white or coloredwashed houses give Mediterranean flair in the warm season. The street cafés and beer gardens breathe new life into the town every day.

Passau
Passau in the southeast of Germany is located at the Austrian border. Situated at the confluence of the rivers Danube, Inn and Ilz, Passau is worldwide known as "The Three Rivers City". The earliest evidence of human settlement dates back to the Neolithic. Passau was part of the Roman Empire for more than 400 years. It became an Episcopal seat in the year 739 AD. Passau was an independent prince bishopric for over 600 years. Finally in 1803 Passau was annexed into Bavaria. The setting of the Old Town, created by Italian baroque masters in the 17th century, shows soaring towers, picturesque places, enchanting promenades and romantic lanes.

tour

Arrival in the 'golden city' of Prague, one of the most beautiful cities in the world with Wenceslas Square, Charles Bridge, Hradčany and the city center, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. Arrive in good time so that you have enough time to see the city's many sights.

Off to the first bike stage! You follow the course of the blue Vltava, pass the large Vltava reservoir, which was only dammed up in 1959, admire small houses with wooden-clad gables, look forward to blooming flowers and cozy restaurants with refreshing Bohemian beer.

Today is all about the castles. In constant ups and downs, you follow your bike path through deep green forests and along the Vltava reservoir to the magnificent Orlik Castle. Marvel at the wonderful buildings on a guided tour, before Zvikov Castle beckons just a few kilometers further along the way. At the confluence of the Vltava and Otava rivers, Zvikov was one of the most important castles in Bohemia in the Middle Ages. It has kept it's pride and beauty to this day! You continue through the rustic Vltava landscape towards the destination of the day, Pisek, on the river banks of the Otava, a tributary of the Vltava.

Today you cycle through the fascinating Otava river landscape. After a short bike ride, the fairytale castle of Hluboká, the most visited castle in the Czech Republic and nicknamed the Neuschwanstein of Bohemia, towers 83 m above the Vltava bend. Finally, you reach České Budějovice, which will make beer lovers' eyes sparkle and impress not only with its breweries, but also with its royal old town and fascinating market square.

There is still enough time in the morning to explore Budweis, but the next highlight is already waiting for you. You cycle to the medieval town of Krumau (UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992), the pearl of the Bohemian Forest. Krumau is romantically situated in a narrow loop of the Vltava and attracts visitors with an ensemble of 300 historic houses, castles, winding streets, street cafes and cozy beer gardens.

It's going to be sporty today! The Bohemian Forest provides crisp climbs, but makes up for it with its beauty. Your bike path on the Schwarzenberg Canal (built 1789-1823 to transport firewood) is today one of the most popular cycling routes between the Lipno Lake area (the largest fishing area in the Czech Republic) and the Upper Austrian Mühlviertel due to the low gradient and its unspoilt landscape.

Magnificent panoramic views as far as the Alps and gentle hills bring you to the Danube river today. On the famous Danube cycle path you continue on along the Schlögener river bend on to Passau. You can also cover the last 20 kilometers from Kasten by boat (approx. € 19.00 per person, including bike).

Today, your nice bike tour ends in Passau. You have the possibility to extend your tour from Passau to Vienna on the Danube bike trail, or to book a transfer to Prague.
