In the Krkonoše Mountains at an altitude of over 1300 meters, a small stream rises that soon becomes a river: The Elbe ("Labe"). Every year, many guests visit the inconspicuous concrete ring, from the center of which the source of the great river seeps out. There are about 1095 kilometers between the source and the mouth, about one third of them in the Czech Republic. From Hohenelbe (Vrchlabi), the gateway to the Krkonoše Mountains, this bike tour takes you along the Elbe to Prague without any major climbs. The young course of the river gently cuts through the Bohemian Basin, which is home to centuries-old towns. Your cycle route leads along quiet side roads, field and riverside paths.

This trip is perfect for:

  • River fans: On this trip you cycle along the Elbe.
  • City enthusiasts: look forward to visiting Prague.
  • Fans of half-timbered houses: enjoy the cute little towns along the route.

Tour

Arrive early and use the time to visit Prague in detail, explore the many sights and start your trip relaxed in the Czech capital.

In the morning you still have time to explore the sights of Prague or simply stroll through the city to Charles Bridge or Prague Castle. At 2 p.m., a shared transfer will take you from Prague to Spindleruv Mlyn, from where your cycle tour starts.
Do you want to go straight to the spring of the river Elbe? Then you have the option of booking the additional package to the spring of the Elbe (incl. an extra night in Spindleruv Mlyn).

You cycle along the upper course of the Elbe, which is still quite modest here, sometimes on this side, sometimes on the other. In Arnau (Hostinne) the giants are waiting for you at the town hall tower! After a leisurely climb of about 3 km (the longest of the whole bike tour) you will reach the Elbe reservoir embedded in wooded heights with its beautifully designed dam crest from 1916. Via a narrow path the bike path leads to the pretty little town of Dvur Kralove on the Elbe.

The cycling stage leads through the varied landscape to Kuks, where 34 magnificent sculptures represent the virtues as well as the vices. Marvel at the garrison town of Josefov, built around 1785, on your bike ride. You can visit bastions and casemates there today. Here you will leave the last small hill behind and reach - along the Elbe, which has swollen to a stately river - the beautiful town of Hradec Kralove.

Through the vast forests east of Hradec Kralove, your bike path will take you in a curve past Raby Castle to the famous town of Pardubice. Enjoy a leisurely lunch break on the car-free square in the center of the listed historic old town, relax in peace or take a walk to the castle. In this imposing complex you will find, among other things, the East Bohemian Museum. After the lunch break you will pass lakes and continue to Brehy, where you will leave the cycle path and arrive at your destination for today, Prelouc.

Along the quietly flowing Elbe and rustling poplars, the cycle path leads past some of the most famous stud farms in the country. Around Tynec to Kolin you can expect some bumpy sections, which will be rewarded with the arrival in Kolin at noon. Here, too, the old town with Charles Square, the former Jewish ghetto and the 13th century cathedral are protected monuments. Afterwards we will continue on the again well asphalted cycle path to Nymburk.

You follow the Elbe to the west through the flat Bohemian basin. Your bike tour leads along field paths and small roads along the river to Celakovice. Here you change from the Elbraweg to the well-traveled cycle route 241, which leads you the last 30 km directly into the center of Prague.

If you look back at the descriptions that have been given to Prague in the last centuries, you will encounter true hymns of praise. There is talk of the splendor of the "Golden City", of the "Mother of Cities", of the "Hundred-Towered Prague". Prague stands for many things: music and the Middle Ages, Kafka and Kisch, beer and dumplings with roast pork. The numerous cafés and restaurants in the city's squares tempt visitors to take a break. There is hardly a tourist who is not taken by the flair of the Old Town and Mala Strana, by the beauty of St. Vitus Cathedral, hardly a visitor who does not plan to come back.

After breakfast your beautiful cycling tour ends in Prague or you continue cycling along the river Elbe towards Dresden.

If you would like to go directly to the spring of the Elbe from Spindleruv Mlyn, you can book the excursion including an extra night in Spindleruv Mlyn and then hike to the source of the Elbe (approx. 15,5 km, walking time approx. 5 to 6 hours): Start with a chairlift ride (not included in the price) up the Medvedin (1235 m). The trail continues past former fortifications and the Elbe waterfall to the Elbe spring. Here you can enjoy the view over the Krkonoše Mountains and the beautifully designed spring complex. The route continues downhill along the very young Elbe to Spindleruv Mlyn.
