South-east of the waltz metropolis Vienna, where puszta, reed belt and vineyards meet, lies the unique nature reserve of Lake Neusiedl. Gentle vineyard hills, reed belts and salt marshes characterise this landscape, in between idyllic villages with stork nests on the roofs, rare bird and animal species, such as the endangered Mangalitsa pigs and Przewalski horses. A holiday in Lake Neusiedl National Park - Austria's newest UNESCO World Heritage Site - means puszta romance with unforgettable sunrises and sunsets. Here you will find a warm climate with around 300 days of sunshine a year. Lake Neusiedl, the water sports Eldorado for sailors and surfers, offers excellently developed cycle paths on land in an enchanting landscape with diverse fauna and flora.

This trip is perfect for:

  • One-time packers: Thanks to the star bike tour offer, you only need to pack and unpack your suitcase once, as you spend the entire trip in the same accommodation.
  • Lake fans: Cycle around Lake Neusiedl and explore the various places in the surrounding area.
  • Mountain enthusiasts: This trip is perfect for all hikers.

Highlights

Lake Neusiedl National Park
Welcome to the Lake Neusiedl - Seewinkel National Park, Austria's only steppe national park! Extensive meadows and pastures, salt lakes, reeds and a rich variety of animal and plant species await you. More than 300 bird species live in the area of the lake. Of these, 150 species are breeding birds.

Podersdorf
Pordersdorf am See is a market town with 2128 inhabitants on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl in northern Burgenland. The village is the centre of tourism in the Seewinkel region with a lido on Lake Neusiedl. The inhabitants pushed tourism and viticulture, so that Podersdorf now has the most visitors in Burgenland.

Halbturn Castle
Halbturn Castle is located in northern Burgenland in the beautiful Seewinkel region and is only about 1 hour away from Vienna and Bratislava. Wines of the highest quality are vinified at Schloss Halbturn. The castle was built between 1701 and 1711 by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt as a hunting lodge for Emperor Charles VI.

Sopron
Sopron is located on the western border of Hungary at the foot of the Alps, 60 km from Vienna and 220 km from Budapest. The city is one of the oldest jewels of the country, in which past and present merge. Sopron forms a bridge between Hungary and its western neighbours, because guests from abroad are most welcome in the city, the city awaits them with open doors, so to speak, as symbolised by the city's coat of arms.

Rust
Rust fascinates its visitors not only with its architectural beauty but above all with its enchanting ambience, which is characterised by the combination of historical architecture with rural life. The entire old town area of Rust am Neusiedler See, which is one of the most picturesque of its kind, is now a listed building.

Tour

Individual journey to Podersdorf on beautiful Lake Neusiedl. Look forward to Podersdorf am See, as it is the only place on Lake Neusiedl that lies directly on the reed-free shore - a special feature that has made it the tourist centre of the region! The 12 m high lighthouse, the landmark of the newly designed family and adventure pool, is unmistakably visible from afar. The inviting shops and pubs on the pier and the promenade convey a holiday feeling and Caribbean flair. Whether on a bike, surfing, sailing or pedal boating, this is the place to be. Podersdorf means soaking up the sun, having fun, doing whatever you like. After checking into your room, you will receive your rental bikes and you can start your first discoveries.

You cycle along the flat cycle path directly along Lake Neusiedl to Rust. Marvel at the world-famous wines that grow here on gentle hills that offer a fantastic view of the lake. Take a short stroll through Rust, the town of storks, and look at the stone bust of the Purbach Turk, which commemorates the overindulgence in wine of a Turkish warrior who failed to retreat and got stuck in the chimney while fleeing. In the afternoon, however, you can enjoy a leisurely drive back to Podersdorf. At the end of the day, enjoy the mild afternoon sun during a boat trip across the lake back to the hotel.

Today a bike tour through the hilly vineyards is on your programme. You will be amply rewarded for the easy ups and downs with a magnificent view of the lake. On the way you will visit Halbturn Castle, the most important Baroque building in Burgenland. It once served the imperial family as a hunting and summer residence, today it is one of the most valuable historical tourist destinations in the country. Relax in the extensive castle park, take part in a tour or take advantage of the diverse offers of the castle restaurant as well as the castle winery. On your way back to the hotel, if you are lucky, you might even see one of the colourful feathered bee-eaters that breed in the sand caves in summer.

A special cycle path awaits you today, the Lacken cycle path. Lacken are smaller or larger lakes that are about 50 cm deep and contain salt. The region owes its unique flora and fauna to this attraction of the Seewinkel - and of course the Lacken cycle path owes its name to it. Today you cycle completely on the flat past wet meadows and vineyards. The now endangered woolly pigs and Przewalski horses graze peacefully by the wayside.

A day to relax and unwind. Enjoy the lake with its numerous recreational opportunities. The lake is a sailor's, surfer's and swimmer's paradise. Depending on your mood, you can also use the wellness area of your hotel.

On the cycle path directly by the lake you roll into the Seewinkel. From here, the ferry takes you to the other shore to the festival town of Mörbisch. On cycle paths you pass the Austrian/Hungarian border and reach the atmospheric Hungarian border town of Sopron, whose historic city centre with lively streets, alleys and medieval buildings is particularly charming. A special insider tip, not far from the Austro-Hungarian border, the "Raspi" winegrowers' house, in the village of Fertöràkos. The menu ranges from lamb fillet and chanterelles to wild boar cheeks and specially picked wild berries. Back to the other shore by ferry.

After a crossing to the other side of the lake, get back on your bikes. Today it's time to explore the Cherry Blossom Cycle Route. You cycle past many vineyards and through endless cherry trees, which are a veritable sea of blossoms in spring. A magnificent panoramic view over the lake and into the Hungarian lowlands compensates for today's easy climbs.

Recovered and rested, you start your journey home. If you still have some time, why not visit the cosmopolitan city of Vienna? You can reach Vienna comfortably by bus in just one hour.

You can choose the daily stages and adjust the order yourself.

As not all ferries start their service on 01.04. and operate into October, there may be route changes in April and October.
